Hermes is according to greek mythology the herald of the Olympian gods. He is also the god of merchants and sheperds. Hermes is the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia. The roman god Mercury is identical to the greek god Hermes.

Being the messenger of the gods, it was his duty to guide the souls of the dead down to the underworld.
